The Artist Formerly Known as ATP

By | October 13, 2020

You may have heard recently that Microsoft has rebranded their Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) offerings. I’m putting this up here because I keep forgetting their new names. This is what they look like:

Microsoft 365 Defender (previously Microsoft Threat Protection)
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (previously Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection)
Microsoft Defender for Office 365 (previously Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection)
Microsoft Defender for Identity (previously Azure Advanced Threat Protection)

While I understand Microsoft’s desire to be consistent with their solution branding, I’m not a huge fan of the constant renaming. It creates confusion and plays havoc with in-house documentation and searching via keywords. The ATP renaming is not the worst I’ve seen. The prize for that sure goes to the product formerly known as Zoomit.

Zoomit Via (pre 1999)
Microsoft Metadirectory Server (MMS)
Microsoft Identity Integration Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (MIIS)
Microsoft Identity Integration Server 2003 Feature Pack (IIFP)
Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Manager Server 2007 (ILM)
Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager 2010 (FIM)
Microsoft Identity Manager 2016 (MIM)
